Islamabad United

Every league has a franchise that everyone else measures themselves against. In the Pakistan Super League, that team is Islamabad United. The Sherus won the very first PSL title in 2016, added championships in 2018 and 2024, and have built a machine famous for one thing above all: doing more with less through data, analytics and ruthless recruitment. They enter PSL 2027 after six consecutive playoff appearances, still chasing the fourth star that would make them the outright most successful franchise in league history. This is the complete guide to the PSL’s original champions.

The Story: The Moneyball of the PSL

When Ali Naqvi and Amna Naqvi’s Leonine Global Sports bought the Islamabad franchise for US$15 million in 2015, it was one of the cheaper founding teams. What the owners lacked in spending power they replaced with an idea imported from baseball: let data make the decisions. While rivals chased big names, United built the league’s first serious analytics department, hunted undervalued players, and picked specialists for specific match situations.

The results were instant. Under Misbah-ul-Haq and coach Dean Jones, United won the inaugural PSL title in 2016, beating Quetta Gladiators in the final with Andre Russell’s 16 wickets and Sharjeel Khan’s fireworks. A second title followed in 2018, and when leadership passed to a 22-year-old Shadab Khan, the youngest captain in league history, the culture never wobbled. There is a quirk to it all: the capital’s team has never actually played home matches in the capital. With no international ground in Islamabad, United’s fortress has always been Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, and in late 2025 they became the first franchise in the league to renew their agreement for the 2026-2035 decade.

2020 to 2023: Building the Streak

After a rare playoff miss in 2020, United began the most consistent run in modern PSL history. Third in 2021, third in 2022 behind Alex Hales’ 355 runs and Shadab’s 19 wickets, fourth in 2023. Always there, never quite champions, and quietly assembling the pieces for something bigger.

2024: The Record Third Title 🏆

Mike Hesson’s first season in charge delivered the trophy. Colin Munro anchored the batting with 326 runs, Naseem Shah led the attack with 15 wickets, and the final against Multan Sultans became an all-time classic.

The 2024 Final: Won Off the Last Ball

In one of the most nerve-wracking finals the league has seen, veteran Imad Wasim produced a five-wicket masterclass to strangle Multan, and United completed the chase off the very last ball with two wickets to spare. It was the franchise’s record third title, won the way United always win: calculation first, panic never.

2025 and 2026: So Close, Again and Again

The title defence in 2025 ended with a 95-run demolition by Lahore in Qualifier 2, despite Sahibzada Farhan’s breakout 449-run season. Then 2026 brought the cruelest exit of all: with new coach Luke Ronchi in charge, United fell in the Eliminator to debutants Hyderabad Kingsmen by just two runs, undone by Hunain Shah’s six-yorker final over while needing only six to win. Six straight playoff appearances is a league record of consistency; the last two exits are the fuel for 2027.

The Core of the Sherus (2026 Squad)

United’s 2026 rebuild mixed retained leaders with typically clever auction work. They retained Shadab Khan, Salman Irshad and Andries Gous, signed Devon Conway directly before the auction, and made Faheem Ashraf one of their top buys at PKR 8.50 crore:

Islamabad United in PSL 2027: What to Expect

United’s floor is higher than anyone’s: six straight playoff runs prove the system works regardless of coach, venue or format. The ceiling question is different. Since 2016 no United side has lost a final, three finals, three trophies, but reaching the final is exactly where the last two campaigns have fallen short, by 95 runs one year and by two runs the next. A fourth title in 2027 would break the three-way logjam at the top and make the Sherus the undisputed kings of the PSL. History says they will be in the playoffs; the auction will decide if they can finish the job. Their fixtures will appear on our Islamabad United Schedule 2027 page as soon as PCB releases the official PSL 2027 schedule.
