The cricket matched the branding early. Shahid Afridi led the team in year one, then Daren Sammy took over and delivered the 2017 title, followed by consecutive final defeats in 2018 and 2019. No team reached more finals in the league’s first seven years. But after Sammy moved into coaching, the trophy stopped coming, and for nearly a decade Zalmi carried the strange burden of being everybody’s second-favourite team: loved everywhere, champions nowhere.

2020: The Sammy Handover
The season everything changed behind the scenes. Daren Sammy stepped down as captain to become head coach, Wahab Riaz took the armband, and Hashim Amla joined as batting mentor under president Inzamam-ul-Haq. On the field, Zalmi scraped into the playoffs in fourth and fell in the Eliminator during the delayed November finish.
2021: Heartbreak in Abu Dhabi
Wahab Riaz led Zalmi all the way to a fourth final, where Multan Sultans set them 207 in Abu Dhabi. Despite Ben Cutting’s furious unbeaten 52 off 31, Zalmi fell 47 runs short. Wahab’s 18 wickets made him the heart of the campaign, but the wait for a second title stretched on.
2022: The Foster Interlude
Under new coach James Foster, veteran Shoaib Malik top-scored with 401 as Zalmi again reached the playoffs, again fell short, eliminated by eventual champions Lahore Qalandars. Three straight years of playoffs, zero trophies. Something had to change.
2023 and 2024: The Babar Trade
It did. In December 2022, Zalmi pulled off the boldest trade in PSL history: Babar Azam arrived from Karachi Kings in exchange for Shoaib Malik and Haider Ali. Chasing just 130, Zalmi’s night nearly collapsed before it began. Babar fell for a first-ball duck as Mohammad Ali removed both openers, and at 40 for 4 the Kingsmen fairytale was alive. Then Aaron Hardie, already the game’s best bowler with 4 for 27, walked out and played the innings of his life: an unbeaten 56, an 85-run stand with Abdul Samad, and victory by five wickets inside 15.2 overs.
“I have a firm belief that you get what is destined for you,” Babar said afterwards, the trophy finally beside him: his first as a captain anywhere, ending Zalmi’s nine-year wait in his first PSL final as skipper.
